Young Friends Volunteer Day

Sunday, July 25th, 1-3pm

315 W. 61st Street

In cooperation with the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, come join the Young Friends as we spend some time getting to know local Holocaust survivors and seniors at one of the Met Council’s low-income housing sites.  The afternoon will consist of a kosher catered lunch and ice-breaker activities for the Young Friends volunteers, survivors, and seniors to participate in together.  The survivors have expressed interest in sharing their amazing stories of survival and struggle with us, so the afternoon promises to be a meaningful and rewarding experience.

Volunteer spaces are extremely limited, so please email Rachel Weiss if you are interested at rweiss@mjhnyc.org as soon as possible.  In order to volunteer you must be available to attend for the duration of the event, from 1-3pm.

Annual Gathering of Remembrance

Sunday, April 11, 2010 at 3 p.m.

Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York

Every year, Jews mark the anniversary of the death of loved ones, fulfilling a sacred obligation to remember. For many of the six million who were murdered during the Holocaust, no one knows when that anniversary falls. To mourn them and to commemorate the loss of all who perished, a special day has been set aside--Yom HaShoah--a day when the entire community gathers to remember and reflect.

Nearly 40 Young Friends were pleased to participate as volunteers in this important memorial ceremony and spend time with many Holocaust survivors taking part in the ceremony.  We hope that next year you will join the 2,000 community members in attendance at this special and moving Yom HaShoah ceremony or choose to volunteer with us.
