Auschwitz Jewish Center Benefit Dinner

Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.

The Mar-A-Lago Club, Palm Beach, Florida

More than 40 guests attended an intimate dinner at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach on Saturday, March 1 to benefit the Auschwitz Jewish Center in Poland. The dinner was chaired by Giovana Stephenson-Haruvi and Abe Haruvi, and co-chaired by Gladys and Morton “Mac” Pickman and Nina A. and Walter Weiner.  Mr. Pickman and Mr. Weiner are Museum trustees as are Ann Oster and Dr. Edward Steinberg, also in attendance, and Dan K. Wassong, who is a Museum Overseer.

The evening featured Museum Director Dr. David G. Marwell, who shared the importance of the Auschwitz Jewish Center and its role in teaching the history of the vibrant Jewish community that once thrived in the small Polish town.  The AJC is located three kilometers from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camps. Following Dr. Marwell’s presentation, the audience screened the Florida premiere of the film about the Center which was shot on location in Poland in December.  As guardians of Jewish memory, both the Museum and the Center are aligned in their missions. The AJC merged with the Museum in 2006 and from that time the Museum has managed the daily operations of the institution and strengthened its inspiring educational programs and exhibitions.

After the screening, Rachel Haruvi shared her amazing story of surviving Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, and the German work camp Zalewedel as an adolescent girl.  Her father and younger brother perished in the Holocaust, but she and her mother survived and went to Palestine, and finally arrived in the United States in 1960 with their two sons, Arthur and Abe.
