Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Tunis

Jewish people have lived in Tunisia since Roman times, though over the years the population has fluctuated from a significant minority to today’s population of roughly 1,500. Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle as we walk together on a livestreamed guided tour through the El-Hara, the Jewish quarter of the Tunis Medina. Now known as the Hafsia Quarter, it was founded in the 10th century as a home for Jews from Tunisia, Spain, Italy, and across the Mediterranean. We will visit the Great Synagogue of Tunis, a magnificent Art Deco building built in 1938, and learn about the two branches of Tunisian Jewry: the Touansa, indigenous Tunisian Jews, and the Granas, Jews originally from Portugal and Livorno, Italy.

Please note: The Museum’s virtual walking tours are live-only events and will not be available to watch after the event is over. Also, event times are in Eastern time; use this time zone converter to see what time it will be in the city being toured.
