On Thursday, November 9, the 79th anniversary of Kristallnacht, we launched our new podcast series, Stories Survive. The first episode features Ruth Zimbler – eyewitness to Kristallnacht – in conversation with our podcast series host Peter Haskell of CBS Radio.
Ruth Zimbler also spoke at the Museum to an audience of more than 200 schoolchildren, shown in the slideshow below, about the night of November 9 – 10, 1938.
As part of the Remember and Be the Light campaign, started by JCC MetroWest, we placed candles in the Museum windows to remember Kristallnacht and protest hatred in our own time. Visitors to the Museum that day lit candles in the Anne & Bernard Spitzer Grand Foyer and were invited to share photos with the hashtag #RememberandBetheLight.
About Kristallnacht
Kristallnacht, translated as the Night of Broken Glass, was named for the window shards that littered the streets the morning after November 9-10, 1938. That night, German and Austrian Jewish businesses and homes were looted; synagogues were burned down; and nearly 100 Jews were murdered and 30,000 more were detained and deported to concentration camps. What began as a unique tragedy for Jews ended as a universal tragedy of unprecedented proportions with World War II.
