One million Jews and tens of thousands of others, including Poles, Roma and Sinti, and Soviet prisoners of war, were murdered at Auschwitz. Auschwitz has become the most widely-recognized symbol of the Holocaust and the tragedy of World War II as well as a painful reminder of what can happen when ethics and values are shattered by ideologies of hate and racial superiority.
