The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust seeks a qualified and motivated candidate for the position of Assistant Registrar. Working under the Registrar, the Assistant Registrar will assist and participate in all Registration departmental operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend exhibition planning meetings and assist in coordination of packing, shipping, and installation schedules and logistics.
  • Liaise with Lenders, Donors, and logistics companies.
  • In collaboration with Museum Registrar, review and enforce Loan Agreements.
  • In collaboration with Museum Registrar and other members of the Collections & Exhibitions Department, perform assessment of documentation and procedures, including participating in the New Acquisitions Committee.
  • Receive and release shipments at the loading dock.
  • With and without supervision from Museum Registrar, manage exhibit installations and deinstallations, pack and unpack objects while making packing notes and taking documentative photographs.
  • Create incoming and outgoing Condition Reports.
  • Track the movement of objects including:
    • Data-entry and updating records in TMS Collections.
    • Creation of documents including, Release / Expect paperwork, receipts, wall lists and other forms as necessary.
  • Organize storage of empty crates.
  • Assist in the processes related to movement of collection objects to off-site storage.
  • Undertake courier trips for objects in transit and/or site visits, as needed.
  • Participate in Outgoing Loans Committee.
  • Generate sensitive documents such as Certificates of Insurance and/or Damage Reports.
  • Work directly with freelance Preparators, Registrars, and interns as needed.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of the exhibitions on view, gallery conditions, and both on and off-site storage facilities.
  • Participate in future inventory and/or rehousing projects.
  • Research content and make available via blog and caption writing.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 2-3 years of full-time experience working in a Museum or related field.
  • Knowledge of art handling methods and materials, procedures and best practices related to exhibitions, collections management and incoming / outgoing loans. Familiarity and adherence to the standards published in Museum Registration Methods.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills. TMS and Mimsy experience a plus.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to thrive in a team and while working solo.
  • The ideal candidate must be flexible and able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be able to maintain discretion related to confidential or sensitive materials.
  • The position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule that may include occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • B.A. in History, Art History, or related fields with possible focus in Museum Studies or comparable work experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following:
    • Sit and/or stand for extended periods.
    • Bend, reach, climb and carry.
    • Manual dexterity and coordination.
    • Must be able to visually inspect artwork, including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
