Part of our MJH Around Town series, this program takes place at the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center, One East 65th Street.

Together, Serge and Beate Klarsfeld tracked down Klaus Barbie—the “Butcher of Lyon”—and orchestrated his extradition to France, helped clinch the convictions of former Nazis and their collaborators and documented all 76,000 Jews deported from France.

The Klarsfelds stood up to those trying to bury the past, were arrested for trying to kidnap a former German Gestapo chief and had two attempts on their lives. Harassment, beatings and deportations became part of their existence. Evidence of their work is on display on the second floor of the Museum’s Core Exhibition, where the Klarsfeld Pillars present more than 1,500 photos of children and their families living in France before they were deported by the Nazis.

For the first time, this unlikely heroic couple—he, a Romanian-French Jew forced to hide in a cupboard when his father was arrested and sent to Auschwitz; she, a non-Jew who grew up in wartime Berlin surrounded by Nazis—are telling their dramatic story in a new dual memoir, Hunting the Truth, which will be published on the day of their appearance at the Streicker Center.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage is proud to partner with the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center in welcoming this brave and committed couple— UNESCO special envoys for Holocaust education, winners of France’s Legion of Honor and Germany’s Federal Order of Merit—for an exclusive New York City conversation.

Admission includes a copy of the book.
