In 1943, Danish officials learned that the Germans were planning to deport all of the Jews in Denmark. Leo Goldberger was 13 years old when his family received an official warning to go into hiding before escaping to Sweden. His family arrived safely in Sweden just as hundreds of other fishing boats carried nearly every Jew in Denmark – 7,220 men, women, and children – to safety.
