Sima Steiner was born in Strij, Poland on December 26, 1928.
She was almost 10 years old when soldiers came to her home and sent her, as well as her 3 older sisters and her parents, to Siberia in a boxcar in the middle of the night. Her two older sisters, who no longer lived in the home and were married, were murdered by the Nazis. Her two older brothers who became partisans had left the home shortly before the soldiers arrive; they were the reason the soldiers had come, as they were looking for political troublemakers. This action, though, saved her family’s lives.
Sima’s husband Joseph was also a Holocaust survivor. Sima died September 5, 2020 in Chicago, Illinois.
